Brief History:
One of his ambitions as a student was to become a musician playing the saxophone. Due to his determination as a student, Clinton often earned high honors. In a national program at Washington, D.C. he once was introduced selection as a delegate to the American Legion Boy's Nation program where then a teen, Clinton met President John F. Kennedy. This changed his goal in life and he knew that there was a future for him in politics. During 1972 Clinton was a part of the presidential campaign to elect George McGovern. Clinton was also involved in Jimmy Carter's presidential campaign in Arkansas. His introduction as an elected official was to be the Arkansas attorney general. In 1976 he was elected the nation's youngest governor in the state of Arkansas for five terms. A campaign issue was to end the ban on homosexuals in the military, and was strongly opposed by not only the military, but also the voters and his views had to be changed to accommodate all concerned.
During his first term the president appointed two members to the Supreme Court and were the first to the high court approved by a president in the Democratic Party in 25 years and also hiring minorities and women to high-level positions. He was responsible for the lowest inflation and unemployment rate in modern times. Clinton sent peace keeping forces to Bosnia and bombed Iraq when Saddam Hussein would no longer allow inspections for evidence of nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons by the United Nations. He was very popular in Europe and Asia for his views on international trade and his mission to stem the tide of drugs. In his bid for reelection in 1996, he listed as accomplishments such as a deficit reduction plan, a college-loan payback plan, and the Family and Medical Leave Act. On a down note the Whitewater affair took up most of the president's final years in office. He was the second president in history to be impeached, and was acquitted by vote counts.
