Brief History:
Biden's father had once led an affluent life, but suffered financial setbacks soon after Biden was born, and for several years the family lived with Biden's maternal grandparents. In 1966, Biden married Neilia Hunter, a student at Syracuse University. In 1968, Biden earned a Juris Doctor degree from the university's College of Law. He was the first of four siblings in a Catholic family, with a sister, Valerie, and two brothers, James and Frank, following. Biden attended the Archmere Academy in Claymont where he was a standout halfback/wide receiver on the high school football team. In 1969, Biden resumed practicing law in Wilmington, first as a public defender. Biden was sworn into office on January 5, 1973, by Francis R. Valeo, the secretary of the Senate, in a small chapel at the Delaware Division of the Wilmington Medical Center.
Biden was a longtime member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He became its ranking minority member in 1997 and chaired it from June 2001 to 2003 and 2007 to 2009. Biden formally declared his candidacy for the 1988 Democratic presidential nomination on June 9, 1987. At the same time Biden was running for vice president, he was also running for reelection to the Senate,[176] as permitted by Delaware law. On November 4, 2008, Obama and Biden were elected with 53% of the popular vote and 365 electoral votes. Biden was elected the 46th president of the United States in November 2020. He defeated the incumbent, Donald Trump, becoming the first candidate to defeat a sitting president since Bill Clinton defeated George H. W. Bush in 1992.
